The Uni-knot

The Uni-knot is a great, extremely versatile fishing knot. Also known by many other names as Duncan loop or Hangmanīs knot, the Uni-knot is excellent for lures, swivels and hooks. Fly fishermen also use it with streamers and nymphs. It can also be used as a spool knot and joining two lines.

Uni-knot is the best suited for all fishing. It can be used as an open loop. This way lures move as they are designed to and will catch more fish. Open loop is the only way to tie lures to move well.

With swivels, hooks and split rings the open loop is not necessary. The knot does not have an effect on the movement of the lure. The Uni-knot can be tightened against the eye of ring.

Tightening

Tightening of the knot must be done gently and firmly.

All knots should be lubricated before tightening. It is important to reduce friction as the line tightens against itself. The best way to moisture a knot is use your own saliva just before the final tightening. The strength of the knot may be reduced if moistening is not done properly.

Strength

After the knot is tightened it should be pulled firmly in order to make sure it is holds tight. The Uni-knot retains approximately 85-90 per cent of the monofilaments breaking strength. Knot strength varies between different fishing line brands but basically Uni-knot works well with all monofilament fishing lines. Soft monofilaments are usually even better than the hard lines. The crucial element is how the knot has been tied. The best knot strength is reached with a uniform tying method into a monofilament fishing line.

It is very important to use good quality swivels and split rings. Inner surface of swivel loop must be smooth. The loop of knot will easily break if swivel is damaged.

Uni-knot and care for the environment

Respect for nature is an essential element of fishing. While the environmental impact of recreational fishing is quite small, broken fishing lines left behind do pose a potential threat to the environment. The lines remain in nature for extended periods, and entangling into nylon fishing lines may cause life-threatening injuries to sea life, birds and animals.

Therefore, environmentally conscious fishermen make sure that their fishing line is cut off as close to the lure as possible, should it snap in action. The crucial element is the knot: the ideal knot strength is 85 to 90 per cent of the line´s breaking strength, thereby ensuring that an overstrained fishing line breaks at the knot, leaving behind the least possible length of fishing line. According to line tests Uni-knot holds 85 to 90 per cent of fishing lines capacity. Knot strength varies between fishing line brands.

With Spinmade Click2Knot everyone can make uniform knots, over and over again. A wider adoption of a properly tied general-purpose knot such as the Uni-knot (universal knot) would be a major improvement - for both the enjoyment and the environment.

Re-tying a knot and changing a lure

It is very important to tie a new knot every now and then. Each fishing day must start with tying a new knot. An old or even a sun damaged knot won´t hold when the big fish bite. With easy-to use Spinmade Click2Knot changing lures is enjoyable as often as you want. Finally a fisherman can utilize one´s whole range of lures for a perfect fishing experience. No fisherman knows too much about fish´s behavior during different seasons, temperatures, weather, streams and so on.

Fishing line rubs against rocks and water plant during fishing. End of line lose its breaking strength so risk of missing lure and fish can increase. That´s why it is worth to cut out 40-60 cm line regularly.

Other versions of the Uni-knot

Uni-knot is very useful for many situations. As its name says, Uni-knot is a universal knot. Basically it is suitable for almost every fishing situation. Uni-knot can be used for lures, hooks and swivels but also for spooling line and attaching two lines. These knots are easy to tie at home, before a fishing trip. In normal fishing conditions Spinmade Click2Knot is the ultimate tool for changing lures as often as needed.

Joining two lines

Uni-knot can be used for joining two lines together. Unfortunately it must be tied by hand. Spinmade Click2Knot canīt do it, at least not yet!

  1. Overlap two lines for about 10 to 20 cm.
  2. Using one end, make a loop that overlies both lines.
  3. Pass the end five to seven times around the two lines.
  4. Pull the end tight to draw the knot up into shape.
  5. Repeat point 1 to 4 to the other end of line.
  6. Pull both lines and the two knots slide together. Trim ends of both lines.

The Spool Knot

For a spinning reel spool knot, make a large loop in the end of the line and tie a Uni-knot. Trim the end very close from knot. Then set the loop around the spool and tighten it by pulling from the main line. To join fishing line to a baitcasting reel the line must pass around the spool first and then tie a Uni-knot.

Note that only two or three rounds are enough for durable spool knot!
